Effect of Pre-Insemination Uterine Lavage on Fertility in a Population of Subfertile Mares

چکیده

Uterine lavage is commonly used in the peri-ovulatory period to improve pregnancy rates in mares with reduced fertility. Previous work has shown that uterine lavage with lactated Ringer’s solution performed immediately before insemination does not affect the fertility in reproductively healthy mares. In the present field study, uterine lavage using lactated Ringer’s solution was performed on a population of barren mares (n 97) immediately before insemination with fresh, cooled, or frozen semen. Sixty-four (64/97, 68%) mares delivered live foals after this treatment. These data suggest that uterine lavage immediately before breeding is not detrimental to fertility and can improve pregnancy rates in previously barren mares. Effect on fertility of uterine lavage performed immediately prior to insemination in mares.

OBJECTIVE To determine the effect on fertility of large-volume uterine lavage with lactated Ringer's solution (LRS) performed immediately prior to insemination in mares. DESIGN Prospective randomized controlled study. ANIMALS 20 mares. PROCEDURE Control mares (n = 10) were inseminated with 1 billion (estimated before cooling) progressively motile spermatozoa that had been cooled in a pass...

Relationship between embryo recovery rate and uterine lavage fluid composition in postpartum mares.

The aim of the study was to determine whether neutrophil numbers (PMN), trypsin-inhibitor capacity (TIC), lysozyme, N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase (NAGase), beta-glucuronidase (B-Gase), total protein, and plasmin in uterine lavage fluid of postpartum (p.p.) mares, either at the time of foal heat insemination or around the time of arrival of the embryo in the uterus, could be used in predicting...

Sperm Transport in the Mare Reproductive Tract: A Review

The objective of this study was to review the literature on sperm transport in the mare. During this process the sperm cells must reach the oviducts in order to fertilize the oocyte, but before reaching this site it must go through the uterus that is a hostile environment at this moment since there is an inflammatory reaction in this location that aims to eliminate excess spermatozoa and bacter...

Effect of frozen semen on the uterus of mares with pathological uterine changes.

Pregnancy rates after frozen semen inseminations (AI), particularly in older and problem mares, are lower than after fresh semen AI. Uterine contractility and the inflammatory reaction after frozen semen insemination were studied in two groups of mares: the abnormal group comprised of 6 old barren mares categorized in biopsy category IIB or III, and the control group including 6 reproductively ...

The usefulness of uterine lavage and acute phase protein levels as a diagnostic tool for subclinical endometritis in Icelandic mares

BACKGROUND Endometritis is a common problem in a broodmare practice, often leading to infertility. The diagnosis is based on several methods such as cytology, bacteriology and histopathology; however the outcome of these methods may be inconclusive even when used together. The objectives of this study were: (1) to investigate the usefulness of acute phase proteins as an additional diagnostic to...
